Longtime Duluth School Board Members Lose Their Seats
Harry Welty Was First Elected To The Duluth School Board 22 Years Ago
Duluth, Minn. -The votes are counted and the results from last night’s election in Duluth came as a shock for some, as multiple School Board and Council seats were on the line.
Two longtime Duluth School Board Members, Art Johnston and Harry Welty, lost their seats.
For Welty, that meant a loss to Sally Trnka and Josh Gorham. There were two at-large seats up for grabs.
Welty was on the School Board for a total of 12 years. He tells us it was an honor to serve District 709 and he will cherish the memories.
“I supported financial security to make sure that we had adequate teacher contact time to make sure that our students got education and we didn’t have a growing education gap,” said Welty.
But he says voting him out, leaves a lot of unfinished business and tough decisions ahead for the new Board members.
“Disappointment, I believe the new School Board has got massive problems and I wish them well,” said Welty.
“Finding some means of bringing more teachers back to lower class sizes will be a very difficult job.”
Welty says he’ll now be focusing on writing and may try to become an author.
Meanwhile Johnston, who was on the School Board for eight years, lost his seat to retired teacher Jill Lofald.
We reached out to Johnston who declined to be interviewed.
