UPDATE: Teen Killed in Officer-Involved Shooting in Odanah Identified
ODANAH, Wis. – The Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa has confirmed that a teenage boy was shot and killed Wednesday in an officer involved shooting, according to a release on their Facebook page.
The release indicates that the incident happened on East Maple Street in Odanah, Wisconsin and involved an Ashland County Sheriff’s Deputy.
The teenager has been identified as 14-year-old Jason Pero.
According to the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office, Pero was reported walking around carrying a knife around 11:40 a.m. Deputies responded to the scene and eight minutes after the report, shots were fired by a responding deputy and the suspect was struck by gunfire. The suspect was treated, but later died from his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
An independent investigation is being conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI).
The Tribal Council stated they are “deeply saddened and troubled by today’s event, and they offer their condolences to the family at this time.”
On Thursday, the Wisconsin Department of Justice indicated the victim’s family has been provided victim witness services. The DCI is continuing to collect evidence and will turn the investigation, according to the DOJ.
