Essentia Health Pharmacies Accepting Unwanted Medications

Anyone can safely and anonymously drop off at all pharmacy locations

DULUTH, Minn. – Essentia Health is looking to keep unused or expired medications out of the wrong hands, as well as out of landfills and waters.

Essentia announced Monday that anyone looking to get rid of prescription and over-the-counter drugs can do so anonymously at any Essentia Health retail pharmacy.

Pharmacies are now equipped with bright blue drop-off boxes. Certain expired medications can have a detrimental effect on one’s health if consumed past their date. Individuals, whether an Essentia patient or not, can dispose of these medications in these drop-off boxes by removing any personal information from the bottles, walking into an Essentia pharmacy, opening the box’s door, and dropping them in.

“We have installed the MedSafe household disposal kiosks at all of our retail pharmacies,” said Sandy Mastaw, pharmacy operations coordinator. “The contents of the boxes are emptied by a licensed disposer and incinerated, keeping them out of the wrong hands, or disposed of in the wrong way.”

Drop-off boxes are for household use only.
