E-cig Flavors may Pose the Greatest Dangers
The flavorings in e-cigarettes may be the most toxic part of the vapor.
Researchers tested about 150 commercially available e-liquids finding 143 unique chemical compounds among them.
Study authors say this shows these liquids are very diverse and because they are so varied they are very hard to study as a group.
Investigators developed a system to test the liquid’s toxicity by exposing lab-grown human cells to the chemicals.
The more toxic a chemical, the more it reduced the growth rates of these cells.
The findings showed the more ingredients included in an e-liquid the more toxic they were especially to cells from human lungs and upper airways.
Further research is needed as the lab-grown cell cultures used may not reflect how they react in the human body.
