Former Greyhound Rick Rickert Retires From Professional Basketball

The Duluth native was named Minnesota Mr. Basketball back in 2001.

DULUTH, Minn. – Former Duluth basketball star Rick Rickert has retired from professional basketball.

The 2001 Minnesota Mr. Basketball winner graduated from Duluth East with a lot of hype behind him. He played college basketball at the University of Minnesota, where he became the first ever Gopher to win the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award.

Although he was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2003, he never appeared in an NBA regular season game, bouncing around the D–League, which is the NBA’s minor league system. However, he did have a long pro career overseas in Europe, Australia and Japan.
