World’s Oldest Hockey Player Celebrates 97th Birthday on the Ice

Mark Sertich celebrated his 97th birthday on Wednesday.

DULUTH, Minn. – Age is nothing but a number and that is exactly how Mark Sertich feels as he celebrated his 97th birthday this week by doing what he loves, playing hockey.

Sertich has been playing for over 80 years, making him the Guinness World Record holder for oldest ice hockey player. Sertich, a U.S. Army veteran, skates a few times a week every week during the year, playing alongside firemen, police offers and doctors half his age.

But for Sertich, there are many different reasons he loves this game and continues to play.

“The people that are involved with it are really exceptional. And the fact that you can get out there and you don’t do just one thing, there are several different things you can do. You pass the puck, you shoot, you try to take it away from the other guy. There’s a lot of different things you can do out there,” Sertich said.
