More Than Just a Tree: Emmanuel Evergreens

Meet the family who wanted to bring the Christmas spirit back to West Duluth.

DULUTH, Minn.- “Christmas is more than just the day. It’s like a whole season,” Kimberly Powell said. “Picking out the tree for most people is like the paramount… The big thing of all the Christmas celebration, aside from that time with family and friends around an amazing meal and giving gifts.”

That’s why Powell wanted to bring the magic of a tree lot back to her home of West Duluth in 2017.

“I finally just decided to take some action on it because the west side was needing something so badly,” Powell said.

About five years ago, the owner of the only tree lot in West Duluth, Johnson’s, passed away, and the family stopped selling trees.

“My husband and I talked about it one day as we were passing by Johnson’s one Christmas…I was like “oh… another year with no tree lot…” and we just brainstormed what we would need to have a tree lot,” Powell said.

But an idea quickly turned to reality, and in their first year, Emmanuel Evergreens sold well over their goal of one hundred trees of all shapes and sizes. Trees like White Pine and Minnesota’s most popular Christmas tree, the Balsam.

Powell quickly realized that the tree lot was about more than just finding the perfect holiday centerpiece.

“The trees are amazing. They smell amazing. I love opening each one up and looking at them because they’re all so unique. But to actually see that these are going to be in someone’s home… Being a part of that in the community, that actually blesses me the most…” Powell said.

Emmanuel Evergreens hopes to sell over two hundred trees this year and upwards of 500 in the years to come, remaining part of the Christmas magic for the families of Duluth.

Emmanuel Evergreens is located at 7408 Grand Ave. Duluth, MN 55808. They are open Sunday-Friday from Noon-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. through Christmas Eve. For more, click here.
