Safe Driving in Snowy Conditions

One thing to remember is to know your braking system.

DULUTH, Minn. -In Duluth alone, there are thousands of drivers on the roads every day.

As snowy conditions continue, drivers should take extra care to be safe on the roads.

Snow driving safety starts way before you actually hit the road.

Drivers should clear their cars of snow and frost from windows.

In Minnesota, it is against the law to drive without being able to see clearly out of your window due to frost.

Also, it is important to be mindful of other drivers.

If snow is left on your vehicle, it can create dangerous conditions not only for you but for others sharing the road with you.

Duluth Police say speed can also be a big issue during the snow season.

“The snow has stopped and the sun is out,” said Sgt. Ryan Morris.

“We might have some clear roads here and there. That’s where we see the speeds increase and people are getting a little bit more comfortable with the roads again and not realizing that those ever changing conditions can come up,” Sgt. Morris continues.

Speed limits are created for regular road conditions.

There isn’t a safe speed recommended by the Duluth Police, during the snow season.

To maintain safety, always slow down to a speed that is comfortable.

Authorities also recommend drivers to be familiar with your vehicle.

One thing to remember is to know your braking system.

Also it is suggested that you keep a safe stopping distance between you and other vehicles.

Make sure your tires have enough tread to give you traction.
