Knowing Your Neighbors: De-Cluttering Your Life

Live Simply with Kim helps Northlanders tidy up.

DULUTH, Minn.- Spring is a time of renewal and rebirth, and that means out with the old to make room for the new.

The weather’s warming up, flowers are in bloom, and you want to start cleansing your home of dirt. There’s just one problem.

Clutter.

“How do you sweep and mop the floor if the kids’ toys are all over?”

The growing popularity of shows like Netflix’s “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” is bringing to light another type of cleaning: de–cluttering.

“It’s important to really do the de–cluttering to get rid of those things that you no longer need, use, or love in your home,” said Kim Schlichting.

Schlichting runs her personal organizing business, Live Simply with Kim.

Think of Marie Kondo of the Northland.

“Her method is gathering all of your clothes and putting them in a pile and lifting them up, choosing them one by one, y’know, which sparks joy in you,” she said.

But Kim operates with a different focus.

“I help folks really set priorities, y’know, what’s important in your life, how do you want to spend your time?”

“Do you want to spend your time maintaining the things that you own, or do you want to spend time with family and friends, some self–care?”

To avoid having clutter in the first place, Kim recommends constantly thinking about what you’re bringing into your home.

Just because something’s on sale, doesn’t mean you need to buy it.

In addition to personal organizing, she also provides a personal shopping service. You can schedule an appointment at 218-213-8071 or on her website: http://livesimplywithkim.com/

“When did the girls turn four?” Kim asks her client, Emily. “July 21st,” replies Emily.

While clearing her clients’ clutter, Kim talks with them about their family, feelings, and lives.

“It’s never about the stuff, it’s the family dynamics, it’s the person’s relationship with their stuff,” said Kim.

She said de–cluttering helps you prepare both your home, and your life, for a new season.

“When you change your space, you can change your life.”
