At least One Dead in Fond du Lac House Fire

Firefighters Were Called to the House Around 6:00 a.m.

UPDATE: FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) – Officials say three people have died in a fire at a group home for people with disabilities in eastern Wisconsin.

One victim was found not long after firefighters responded to the Fond du Lac home about 6 a.m. Thursday. Two others were found later and all victims were on the second floor of the house.

Fond du Lac Fire Chief Peter O’Leary says they will look for answers as to why the victims were unable to escape, including whether there were working smoke detectors in the home and whether the residents had an escape plan in the event of a fire.

O’Leary says firefighters encountered a large amount fire and smoke when they arrived on scene, making survival improbable. He says the tenants rent rooms at the house.

Fire crews found one victim and said another person was unaccounted for and that a search was in progress Thursday morning.

WLUK-TV reports firefighters were called to the house about 6 a.m. Officials say the fire appeared to have started on the porch.

Fire Chief Peter O’Leary says the blaze was very complex and stubborn. O’Leary says firefighters encountered a large amount fire and smoke when they arrived, making survival improbable.
