Cloquet Fire Sees Most Calls Ever in 2019

The Cloquet Area Fire District responded to just under 3200 calls last year.

CLOQUET, Minn.- The Cloquet Area Fire District has seen a very busy 2019, with the largest number of calls in the Department’s history.

The Department has responded to just under 3200 calls last year, and 2020 is shaping up to be just as busy.

Just last Sunday, they received two calls for fires in one day.

But according to Fire Officials, the majority of calls have been for their ambulance staff.

“The main driver is the medical side and the aging population,” said Fire Chief Kevin Schroeder. “We also ran into a large number of incidents over the last couple years with opioid issues and mental health issues.”

“It’s been a struggle, we’re having trouble finding people to fill positions.”

The Chief added the station is budgeted for nine person shifts, but right now they can only run them with seven people.

Of their 64-person staff, half are full-time including administrative and office positions, and the other half are paid on-call.

Despite their struggles with numbers, the Department is expanding their reach this year, stationing full-time staff at their Western station in Perch Lake Township. This will allow them to dispatch across both ends of the city.
