American Birkebeiner 2020 Could Yield Record Setting Race Times
American Birkebeiner 2020 Events Begin Thursday, February 20 in Hayward, Wisconsin
HAYWARD, Wis. – Events leading up to the American Birkebeiner kick off Thursday, February 20 in Hayward, Wisconsin.
Preparations are already underway, with excitement getting wild in the region.
Ben Popp, Executive Director of the Birkie chatted with FOX 21’s Brett Scott Friday morning regarding preparations and the potential for a record-setting year.
“It’s interesting, we had so much snow early on in the season and then we did not have a lot of snow in the Hayward area as of late. Ultimately we have a lot of really old snow, but it’s really fast,” said Popp.
Popp says the Birkie is expecting a strong international field of athletes coming to Hayward for this year’s race.
“We’re excited to provide a great course for all racers,” said Popp.
Roughly 40,000 people are already beginning to trickle into the area.
Next week, the International Bridge will be constructed along Highway 63 in Hayward, and many loads of snow will be hauled in to construct the finish line.
Over 13,000 skiers are taking part in this year’s race.
Volunteer opportunities are currently available. More than 3,800 positions need to be filled before race day on Saturday, February 22.
