CHUM Holds Annual Backpack Drive

Since 2006, CHUM has provided more than 10,000 backpacks to students in need.

DULUTH, Min. – CHUM is once again partnering with Duluth Public Schools for their annual backpack drive.

Since 2006, CHUM has provided more than 10,000 backpacks to students in need.

This year the goal is to give away about 1,00 bags filled with school supplies, which will go to students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

The upcoming academic year could potentially look a little different this time around, but CHUM leaders say its important to help get those students off on the right foot.

“Regardless of where you are learning, you need to have your pencils and your pens,” said Director of Distributive Services Scott Van Daele. “We are really trying to hit that need of continuing education, regardless of what it may look like.”

This is one of the first duties on the books for the newest Duluth Public Schools superintendent.

He hopes this partnership to get students ready for the school year, shows the value of communities working in unity.

“It takes a village. We can’t just have one particular organization or just the district be there to lift success for our kids. It really is going to take the whole city of Duluth,” said Superintendent John Magas.

This year as a safety precaution folks interested in donating can no longer purchase their own supplies from other stores.

All donations must be purchased online on CHUM’s website.
