North Shore Stand Up Paddleboarding Holds Kids Club
The Kids SUP Club meets once a week and is a two-hour paddle around Barkers Island.
SUPERIOR, Wis. – North Shore Stand Up Paddleboarding (North Shore SUP) is getting kids outside and in the water.
“We take a group of kids around the [Barkers] Island. It’s really fun for these kids to experience going around the whole island. It’s such an adventure for them,” co-owner of North Shore SUP Heather Holmes said.
The Kids SUP Club meets once a week and takes about two hours to paddle around the island, and is open to kids with any kind of paddling experience.
“We do go through with the parents and see if they do have any paddling experience. We only take so many kids with no experience and then we make sure we have a bunch of kids with experience as well,” Holmes said.
“My mom saw something on Facebook and she’s like do you want to do this because I like outdoors and I’m like I’ll try it. It was so much fun so I begged my mom to come back and do it again,” 11 year old Jette Leopold said.
“For about a year. I got started with the ice cream socials,” 10 year old Cutter Parent added.
The group of kids go out with a certified stand up paddleboard instructor who leads the way and teaches them different things as they go.
“Our instructor Garrett was teaching us how to do fun stuff on the paddleboard and to make it more fun,” Leopold said.
“They are teaching them skills of paddleboarding, skills of the sport, and going through different things with them as far as different tricks, different maneuvers they can do on the board. They have no idea how much they’re learning,” Holmes added.
And while they’re learning the sport and seeing the beauty of Barkers Island, they’re also just having fun on the water.
“I kind of like it when we get to jump in, there’s a little beach area where we can get to the beach,” Parent said.
“Once we went around the Island, I felt really calm and I felt like I was happy,” Leopold added.
North Shore SUP offers the kids club once a week, and also does other events and paddle rentals. Their schedule changes weekly, which you can find on their website.
