John’s Tiny Workshop Makes Customized Wood Signs
John Bonk makes a variety of wood signs for whatever people desire.
TWO HARBORS, Minn. – John’s Tiny Workshop, located off of Highway 61 in Two Harbors, has been open for three years but has been in the works for much longer.
“My son-in-law had this trailer that he had a hot tub on and we had just taken the hot tub off and moved it into his backyard and he had this trailer so he said ‘do you want to make this your workshop’ and so I did,” owner John Bonk said.
Bonk opened the shop just doing woodworking until he saw someone making wood signs and decided to go down that path.
“I built my own log home at one point so I have done wood working, just larger scales, not small stuff like signs. And I liked woodworking and had a part time job here as a pastor and I needed something to do. I made my son’s cabinets for his house, we were going to make this a woodshop and then I ran into this and I loved it,” Bonk said.

“I make Lake Superior regularly, I make eagles regularly, but everyone wants something different and that’s what is kind of fun about it,” Bonk added.
Customers can stop by the trailer or visit his website to figure out exactly what they want.
“From the type of wood to the colors you want to the graphics you might want on it, what do you want it to say,” Bonk said.
After he talks with the customers, Bonk sands down the wood and then creates the design which only takes a few hours.
“You have to make the wood almost into a canvas, you can’t start with some rough piece, well you can but you’ve got to get it down to where it’s nice and smooth to make it work nice,” Bonk said.
While this summer has been busy for Bonk, he says it’s been fun giving custom signs to the community.
“Just knowing people are happy with what I do, there’s nothing better than having someone say ‘that’s what I wanted exactly.’
