Superior Volleyball Team Begin Alternate Spring Season

Superior is scheduled to open their season Thursday at home against Sparta.

SUPERIOR, Wis. – Back in the fall, the WIAA gave schools the option to play fall sports on schedule or move to the alternate spring season. And after over a year of not playing at all, the Superior volleyball team is finally back at practice.

The Spartans were one of only a few teams who opted out of playing in the fall and chose to play during the 2021 alternate spring season. Practices began last week and so far, there’s been a little bit of an adjustment. But the team says they are grateful to be playing any kind of season.

“It was kind of nerve-racking. We didn’t know what to expect. We didn’t know what was going to happen. We didn’t know how to prepare. It means a lot that as a senior that we are able to play and that we’re all hear together and that we can play one more time together,” said senior outside hitter Halie Matthias.

“This is a great opportunity because we wouldn’t have had anybody to play if we stayed in the fall. At the time, Minnesota moved to the spring also. And then they decided to go back. And it’s like “oh boy”. But yeah, very grateful,” head coach Brenda Pluntz said.

Superior’s schedule is usually made up mostly of teams from Minnesota. But since everyone already played in the fall, they’ll have to face only Wisconsin teams and even that list is pretty short.

“I think it’s going to be interesting to learn how they play. But luckily, we get to play each team twice so we’ll definitely be able to like know how they play the second time around,” senior libero Hannah Drake said.

“We have a little pod of four to five teams. We’ll play them at home and play them away. It’s Sparta, two La Crosse teams, two Eau Claire teams and just last week, we picked up a game with Washburn. We’ll be travelling a little bit, but it will be fun to play other teams that we haven’t played before,” said Pluntz.
