NCAA Tournament Preparations Already Starting for UMD Women’s Basketball Team

Head coach Mandy Pearson says that her coaching staff has already started looking into what teams they could potentially face in the central region.

DULUTH, Minn. – The UMD women’s basketball team is coming off a great weekend after capturing their sixth NSIC tournament title in program history.

The Bulldogs earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, which will be their third trip in a row. But with every trip to the dance comes with increased expectations.

“The first year that we made it, it was kind of like “OK this is awesome. We made it.” That was kind of our goal. And now, this last year and especially this year, I think our team really knows we can make a difference in the tournament,” said senior Payton Kahl.

But before you think the Bulldogs are going to just kick back and relax before Selection Sunday, head coach Mandy Pearson says that her coaching staff has already started looking into what teams they could potentially face in the central region, including teams from the MIAA whose conference tournament begins Tuesday night.

“[Assistant coach] Jessie’s already started working on personnel. I’ve started studying some of the teams’ rosters a little bit and watching a little bit of film. We won’t waste a ton of a time on that until we see who advances tonight. But I think we have a pretty good idea of who at least three of those teams are going to be, or at least two of them so we can begin that preparation now,” said Pearson.

UMD was ranked 3rd in Tuesday’s final regional rankings. The NCAA Selection Show for the Division II women’s basketball tournament will be live streamed Sunday night.
