Memorial Day Travel Bringing Families Together

DULUTH, Minn.– With about 37 million Americans traveling this past weekend for the holiday we caught up with a few travelers in Canal Park who used the time to see their family members for the first time in 17 months.

A father and daughter reflected on reconnecting as a family this Memorial Day, both are originally from Bemidji, but one is now living in Arizona and decided to both drive to meet in Duluth.

“Everything is so green here compared to Arizona and it feels like a breath of fresh air for sure,” Alicia Papke-Larson said. Her father was excited to have the familly all in one place again after the long wait, “having everybody back together was just a settling, calming, kind of thing and the kind of joy you feel its just hard to describe,” Mark Papke-Larson said.

According to AAA, 23 million Americans traveled for Memorial Day Weekend last year, which the organization says was the lowest it has ever recorded since it began tracking Memorial Day travel back in 2000.
