DULUTH, Minn.-As the pandemic continues the need for blood donations across the country is growing.

The American Red Cross is holding a blood drive at AMSOIL Arena through Thursday. There were 50 donation appointments booked for Wednesday and more blood donors are needed for tomorrow’s event.

“I started with the Red Cross almost a year ago and I always knew it as a disaster relief,” said Corey Boe, of the American Red Cross. “That is where I always donated blood, but to now be here everyday and see people come in, and it’s a completely selfless act.”

Summer is a critical time for blood donations and the American Red Cross is looking to set up additional blood drives for the season. Blood donors can donate every 56 days and up to six times every year.

“I’ve given blood before and it’s an important thing,” said donor Bruce Minea. “They’re always bugging me because I have trauma blood, which is universal donor. That’s what the helicopters and ambulances have. … It’s always in real demand.”

Thursday’s event will be going from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and walk-ins are welcome.
