Katie Stark to Join UMD Women’s Basketball Coaching Staff

After her playing career ended, Stark spent this past season on the coaching staff for the UWS women's basketball team.

DULUTH, Minn. – Hayward native Katie Stark was a major part of the resurgence of the UMD women’s basketball team. And she had so much fun with the Bulldogs that she has decided to come back to help out her former head coach.

Mandy Pearson announced this week that Stark will be joining her coaching staff for next season. Stark played at UMD from 2016 to 2020 and says her interest in coaching only developed recently when she wanted to stay involved with basketball.

“It’s super exciting. I’m really glad to be back. And I think it will be kind of cool to see the opposite side of the program that I went through as a player. I’m glad that Coach Pearson has been able to turn the program around and I’m glad to be able to be around and hopefully keep getting further into the tournament here,” Stark said.

After her playing career ended, Stark spent this past season on the coaching staff for the UWS women’s basketball team, where she gained a lot of first-time experience.

“I learned a lot more how to communicate things with my words, instead of just getting out there and showing people how to do it. I have to talk it out and break it down and learn how individuals learn, and then try to change my coaching style to fit how they learn best,” said Stark.

During her time with the Bulldogs, Stark was named to the All-NSIC second team, as well as the all-conference defensive team.
