Superior Police, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Use Old Motel For SWAT Training

The Superior Fire Department will conduct fire training at the Manning Wednesday.

SUPERIOR, Wis.-The old Manning Motel in Superior’s Billings Park neighborhood turned into an explosive training ground for Superior and Douglas County SWAT teams.

A loud boom shook the property, as Superior PD and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office tactical teams practiced an explosive breach of one of the doors at the motel.

The site was purchased by Kari Toyota to be demolished to make way for their new car dealership.

So officials say police and fire crews were given permission to be as hard on the building as they wanted, for the type of training they are only able to do a handful of times a year.

“It’s invaluable,” said Superior Police Capt. Tom Champaigne.

“It’s not that often that we get a lot of doors, a lot of rooms, a lot of walls. We get to break things and not have to worry about the repercussions. We get to do the things that we know in the future if we have to do it we get to learn the tools how to do it,”  he said.

Officials say they have been in contact with nearby neighborhoods to warn them about the booms.
