Lake Superior Brewing Co. Looking at Summer Re-Opening with Brewpub, Apartments

The new owners of Lake Superior Brewing are a year and a half into redeveloping the building in the Lakeside/Lester Park Neighborhood

DULUTH, Minn.- One of the oldest breweries in Minnesota is inching closer to its reopening in its new Lakeside/Lester Park building this summer.

The new owners of Lake Superior Brewing are a year and a half into redeveloping the building formerly occupied by Xcel Xercise and Sun City Tanning Center on Superior Street.

The Maxims are turning the building into Lake Superior Brewing’s new brewpub and “Brew-Tel” studio and two bedroom apartments.

The new owners say like other projects the supply chain shortage has made things difficult.

Both with getting refrigeration equipment and lumber as well as finding child care while they work on it themselves.

But they say they are determined for a soft opening in spring and throwing open the doors in summer.

“This is the biggest project we’ve ever done,” co-owner Sarah Maxim said.

“We’ve flipped a couple homes we’ve done our own home as far as massive remodel things but nothing on this size,” she said. “With that said we both are hardworking capable people.”

They’ve entirely gutted and remodeled the 2,000 square feet into apartment units and soon a brew-pub with sit down and grab and go food available.

Bookings for those spaces are online and they’re already a hit — booked out through February.

“Even just people in the neighborhood that are like hey, now my siblings have a place to stay when they come visit us and stuff like that,” said Maxim. “So I think, especially with COVID too people are looking at alternative places to stay where they aren’t in a big shared common area and they don’t have shared elevators and things like that.”

Since 2019, Lake Superior Brewing has sat idle but Sarah Maxim and her husband recently purchased the company.

The Lester Park neighborhood used to prohibit alcohol up until 2016.

Owners say to pay attention to social media for construction updates, hiring, and more.
