UMD’s Karen Stromme and Gary Holquist Announce Retirement

The duo announced they will be retiring come June of this year.

DULUTH, Minn.- After a combined 75 years involved with the UMD athletic department, Karen Stromme and Gary Holquist have announced they will be retiring this June.

A special ceremony was held Thursday at Romano Gym to honor the husband and wife duo who have held many positions over the years with UMD from coaching to administration. One thing they say will never change is being a Bulldog for life.

Stromme says, “I’ve been really around UMD athletics for my entire life and I think once you do that and you see the reverence that fans have and the culture that you feel when you come in the gym, it becomes a part of you.”

“Our jobs were really a lifestyle and what I look forward to now is just taking a breath, taking a pause and seeing what’s out there again. I think we still have a lot of good things left in our life,” says Holquist.

In over 20 seasons with the Bulldogs Stromme is the winningest coach in UMD basketball history. Holquist coached men’s basketball in the early 2000’s but did most of his work behind the scenes, raising over $15 million dollars to help UMD’s athletic programs and scholarships.
