Update: UMD Teamsters Workers Reach Tentative Deal Before Planned Strike
(10/22/22) Update: University of Minnesota workers with Teamsters Local 320 have reached a tentative deal, which avoids a strike planned for next week, according to the union.
“Next week’s strike has been called off, and the agreement will be voted on by the membership. More details will be forthcoming later today,” the union posted on its Twitter page Saturday morning.
Nearly 200 UMD employees are part of the Teamsters union, which includes positions in dining services, custodians and ground crews.
The University of Minnesota released the following statement Saturday:
“Today, the Teamsters (IBT 320) and the University of Minnesota reached a tentative three-year agreement for all our represented Teamsters employees after three days of mediation. The strikes planned for the Twin Cities and Duluth campuses next week will not occur while Teamsters members vote on the agreement. If approved, the agreement will then go before the Board of Regents for approval.
We are pleased to reach an equitable settlement that fairly compensates our Teamsters employees. We will provide you with updates as more information becomes available.”
(10/21/22) DULUTH, Minn. – Some UMD employees are getting ready to strike Saturday, Oct. 29.
The nearly 200 employees are members of Teamsters Local 320 and includes dining services, custodians, and ground crews.
The upcoming strike at UMD will last through the following Tuesday.
This strike is part of the University of Minnesota system as a whole involving the Teamsters’ next contract.

The workers say they are understaffed and are being paid poverty wages — some less than $16 an hour. The union wants all employees to be paid at least $20 an hour.
The University of Minnesota says it has since upped its offer to meet the $20-an-hour base pay.
The latest statement reads in part:
“We are committed to staying at the negotiating table for as long as necessary to reach an equitable settlement that ensures our employees are fairly compensated and rewarded for their work. Ultimately, we remain hopeful that we can reach an agreement with our valued employees and the University will continue to negotiate in good faith and with a spirit of cooperation.”
The Teamsters union says beyond pay, the University has not offered enough movements on issues around summer work, job postings and putting an end to hiring in steps.
