New Mailbox Has Hibbing Residents Going Postal

Cars vs. Safety Poles

It seems like a simple task. You go to the post office, pull up next to drop box and slide in a letter. But, that’s not the case in Hibbing.

“The mailbox was hit probably three to four times a month. Just the snorkel part that sticks out was hit and there was black glass we’d sweep up on the ground all the time. So that was always hit,” said Hibbing Postmaster Rich Rusich.

The drive-up mail box (behind the post office) was hit so hard in October it tore the anchors out of the ground and destroyed the box, leaving mail exposed for two days.

In order to prevent that from happening again, the postmaster installed posts on both sides of the box.

Well, fast forward to today, and that, too, is causing some headaches.

The postmaster said people are now telling him the posts are in the way, they can’t reach the box, and to top it off, they keep swapping paint with the new posts.

“There have been several complaints. I’ve had a couple people write me letters, who have been upset. I just want to make sure everybody knows I’m aware of it and I will get it fixed,” Rusich said.

The box posts are set to be fixed as soon as the ground thaws
