A building that served furry friends over in Superior, for nearly 40 years came down Monday morning.

The Superior Animal Shelter has been out of service for a few months, with all stray animals being taken to the Douglas County Humane Society.

Mayor Bruce Hagen, who watched the building go up years ago, knows the demolition marks a milestone.

“It was in very poor condition, terribly ill–equipped for today’s purposes, as well as the actual components of it, heating and so forth. So it’s served its time, it is tired, and it needed to be replaced,” Hagen said.

The new shelter at Bear Creek Park is set to open in July.
