An American Idol hopeful with Northland connections is on the fast track to Hollywood.

Maddie Walker has family in Two Harbors and they tell Fox 21 what it took for her to make it this far.

Maddie has always been on stage whether it’s at the House of Blues, Iowa State Fair or Emanuel Lutheran Church in Two Harbors.

“She’s been singing since she was little,” said Maddie’s cousin, Brad Heston.

Heston works at Judy’s Cafe in Two Harbors.

He has started a campaign to get Two Harborites to vote for the talented singer.

“Anything and everything to try and get her name out and her affiliation with Two Harbors,” Heston expressed.

Heston tells us Maddie has always had a soft spot for this area and enjoys visiting.

“They used to come up all the time and not so much in later years.  But, she’s still coming up every couple times.”

Now, the small town is supporting Maddie through every step of her journey.

“A lot of people are now starting to watch American Idol because of the local connection and that’s amazing.”

Heston is originally from Ankeny, Iowa, which is where Maddie lives.

Folks in her hometown think highly of the 16 year old, top 24 finalist.

But, getting to the top has not been easy.

Last season, her idol journey was cut short due to her inexperience.

“She took a little bit of time to reflect and learn who she was,” Heston added.

But, Maddie’s back to chase the dream she’s been after since she was 2 years old.

There are millions of people watching American Idol and Heston has confidence Maddie will remain grounded and positive.

“I knew it would happen eventually because that’s just the way she is.  She doesn’t give up.”

His advice? “I would say just be you.  Be yourself, Maddie.”
