270,000 Acres

Environmental community members gathered in Two Harbors Thursday evening to discuss restoring vegetation along the North Shore Forest.

Logging in the early 20th century, fires, and grazing deer have reduced the number of Spruce, Pine and Cedar along the shore, according to community members at the meeting.

The North Shore Forest Collaboration hopes to restore 270,000-acres between Two Harbors and the Canadian border.

The largest hurdle is that 40 percent of the land along the shore is privately owned.

Duane Lula, a North Shore Forest Collaborative organizer, explains what the future holds.

“While there will be planting, protecting some of those trees and also treating invasive species,” said Lula.

There are grants and some funds for the projects, but organizers are also looking for other ideas.
