A heads up from the U.S. Coast Guard as they started ice breaking in the Twin Ports Monday morning to prepare for the upcoming shipping season.

Crews are in ice covered areas that are often used recreationally.

Initial operations started inside the Duluth/Superior Harbor, then will expand to offshore.

Eventually operations will include Two Harbors, Taconite Harbor, MN, Silvery Bay and Thunder Bay, Ont.

The Coast Guard station gives a strong warning for the ice fisherman still out there.

“Know the ice conditions and know what you’re going out into. Prepare what you are going to go out on.  Dress for the weather and dress for the water you’re going into,” said Coast Guard Petty Officer, Justin Abbott.

Operations will last for the next two weeks.
