UMD is starting a trend by offering gender inclusive housing in the fall to 5 on campus apartment buildings.
Students will now be able to select any combination of genders to live with.
Students say it’s supportive of their goal to have an inclusive campus climate.
UMD’s Student Association has received strong votes in favor of the policy and it’s something the University should be proud of.
“Some people say we’ve had set backs but we keep continuing to move forward. I think that’s the true testament to the people here is that we don’t give up. We are going to keep pushing for social justice in this world and in our campus,” said UMD’s Student President, Jacob Froelich.
Froelich says there are no disadvantages to this addition besides it allowing for students to have another option.
“It doesn’t take away anything. It’s only adding another benefit and I think that’s something that students from all walks of life really appreciate,” said Froelich.
UMD is the first public University to offer this option in Minnesota.
