In this edition of Hanger Hits the Road, we head to the small town of Poplar, Wis., as FOX 21’s Dan Hanger reports.
There’s something about small towns that always seem to have those characters that make the place pop.
“I don’t have neighbors than a quarter mile of me. And if I had neighbors any closer, I think I would shoot them,” joked Steven Bergsten, a longtime resident of Poplar for 66 years.
“I logged and I farmed and I worked for the railroad. And now I am a professional bum. I’ve been a professional bum for 20 years now. You can’t just be a bum, you have to be a professional,” Bergsten joked again.
This little gem of a village is about a half hour south of the Twin Ports in Douglas County right off U.S. Highway 2.
Scott Lundberg is another well-known face who owns the Poplar Hardware store that’s been around for decades.
And with a population of roughly 600, the isles of his store are often the spot for locals, especially summer cabin owners.
“It’s the people. Everybody who comes here, we know them, they all know us,” Lundberg said.
The hardware store is next to essential places like the post office, grocery store and restaurant, which is literally on a one-block stretch called Main Street.
It’s another northern Wisconsin small-town community that has a big sense of community that you won’t understand until you stop by and try it for yourself.
“Can’t get any better than that,” Bergsten said. “If you’re an old timer, you don’t have to go too far. And it’s even got beer here in town. So can’t get much better”
