Muddy Trails Lead to Maintenance Issues

Trails Closed in Duluth Due to Weather

While the weather has been enjoyable this past week, Duluth City Officials say the warm-up is hurting 200 miles of trails.

Right now, they’re very fragile so using them is causing damage.

In order to help preserve the trail system, officials have currently closed all trails.

City officials tell us repairing them will cost more money which calls for more resources.

“It takes a lot of our community resources to build and maintain those trails.  We don’t want to see them damaged.  Most people are very accommodating and will get off the trail and won’t use it again until it’s dried,” Parks and Rec Manager, Kathy Bergen said.

Using them may also put harm on the people.

“Their riding recklessly or they’re walking recklessly because even footprints can damage a trail depending on how soft it is,” Bergen said.

Last year, the city spend more than $350,000 on trail repairs.

No word on when the trails will open.
