St. Louis County officials are mourning the loss of a longtime leader and friend.
Alan Mitchell, who served as the St. Louis County Attorney for 28 years, died in a motorcycle accident Saturday near his home in Arizona.
Current County Attorney Mark Rubin began his career working under Mitchell, and told FOX 21 that Mitchell was his 2nd chair in the first attempted murder case he ever tried back in 1978.
Rubin also said, Mitchell made people proud to work under him, and leaves behind a legacy of true public service.
“I learned a lot from him, and hopefully what we all learned from his style of leadership, his dedication, his commitment to making things better for the people of this county – this state – hopefully it rubbed off on us, and we’re a better office now because of him,” Rubin said.
Mitchell was also very instrumental with the St. Louis County Law Library.
Following his semi–retirement, his legacy was honored in the summer of 2014 when the law library was re-named the Alan Mitchell Law Library.
“Al really believed in public service,” Rubin explained. “He felt that we were doing work that made a difference. He instilled a great deal of pride in all of us who worked for him.”
As of Sunday evening, the family was still waiting to hear the results of an autopsy.
Funeral arrangements are still being determined, but county officials have good reason to believe services will be held in Duluth.
