As we get closer to summer. more people are spending time outdoors, and officers say this leads to an increase in the number of crimes seen in Superior.
Thursday, members of the Superior community met with police officers to discuss ways to prevent these crimes from occurring.
The Superior Community Council meets once a month to discuss relevant issues in the community, and Thursday’s theme was theft prevention.
Superior police officers say statistics show an increase in the number of thefts in May through September, simply because more people are out and about.
The Uniform Crime Report for the City of Superior shows there were 119 more thefts in 2014 than in 2013.
Further, there were 200 residential burglaries in 2014 with about $145,000 worth of stolen property.
These numbers concern residents, especially one mother who recently watched a break-in happen next door.
“I was coming home from work at 4:30 in the afternoon when I watched it happen, and I felt a little weary of the situation, so I called the police. Little did I know, the people weren’t supposed to be there. It could have been my house that it happened to,” said Superior resident, Mandy Hammer.
Officers say it is important to use common sense, especially during warmer months, and keep valuable items out of your car, and in a secure place.
