The Shack: From Fine Dining to Family-Friendly
A Change of Atmosphere to Meet Customer Demands

It’s a restaurant that just a few years ago, was a lot fancier, but now the servers at The Shack in Superior wear a different uniform.
“When I first started] we had bow-ties and cummerbunds, skirts, the whole thing; we were just all fancy,” says manager Diane Munger. “Now we’re jeans and t-shirts. We went from very, very fancy to just casual and fun now.”
Munger says customer demands for a more family-friendly atmosphere fueled the decision to change to their current incarnation.
“People were getting away from feeling like they were having to dress up to go out and whatever. This way can come in in any dress, any attire. Just come in and have fun.”
The Shack has been open since the 1960s, but it’s taken on this more casual vibe just two years ago.
Munger admits that changing the look and feel of her business has taken a little time to get used to.
“We just had to get our name back out there. We’re getting better and better every week. We’ve had people say ‘Oh I forgot about you!’ or now they’re coming back – whether because the food is good or they’re just enjoying the whole experience.”
And their location just off the Bong Bridge in Billings Park can make it tough to get people from the Minnesota side to come in and eat
“The bridge has been hurting us the last couple of years. It was closed one side, and this summer it’ll be closed. We’re not that hard to get to, take that extra half of a mile; it’ll be worth your while.”
And whether it’s a steak, or seafood, or a burger that’s bigger than your head, The Shack has you covered.
They’re open seven days a week, with happy hour specials every day.
