In the past 30 days, the Duluth Fire Department has responded to a dozen fires.
Of those fires, five of them have been massive which officials say is out of the norm.
The latest one burned through a four-plex on the 1900 block of East 1st Street.
Firefighters rescued one trapped tenant without injury.
The rest of the seven tenants got out alive, but one cat died.
Some students who lived in that building came back to collect what they could Friday.
“It’s really sad. We loved our apartment and we had a lot of good times in there,” said Jocelyn Nelson, a fire victim and student at UMD. “It was very overwhelming and stressful to go through and basically pick what you wanted to save and what’s not worth it anymore.”
The Red Cross has put up the tenants in a hotel for the next three days.
The Duluth Fire Marshal is investigating a cause.
