While the black bear near city hall received a lot of media attention, the public should be aware black bears are generally afraid of people.

To avoid any confrontation, the Lake Superior Zoo advises never to feed or approach a bear, leave them along and keep your distance. 

“The worse thing we do is bringing attention to it and by crowding the animal we end up scaring it,” said the Zoo’s Director of Animal Management, Maicie Sykes.

But, they are most drawn to areas where there is food, especially left over food. 

“In town it’s obviously a little unusual to see a predator in town.  So, they are most likely attracted to things that are very easy like garbage cans, garbage and any waste.”
