An unthinkable crime has two Minnesota communities remembering a fallen police officer after his son surrendered to police in connection to the shooting.

Here in the Northland, friends and family are remembering the Hermantown High School graduate who was actively involved in the community.

For some, Todd Besser was the name of the victim who was fatally shot in his home.

But for many he will always be more than a victim.

He was dedicated to his family, a musician, tireless worker, athlete, good friend, father and son.

“He was smart, witty, and the thing you remember about him is his smile and sense of humor,” said former teammate, Daryl Illikainen.

Todd Besser, 49, born and raised in Hermantown, always knew how to put a smile on your face.

“That was one of the most phenomenal years in Hermantown football history,” said Illikainen.

Daryl shared a special moment with him years ago on the field after taking second place in the state tournament.

“To do that in football was quite a special group,” he said.

Although Besser may not have put points on the board, he scored a touchdown in Illikainen’s eyes.

“He was that role player that would just be there and work hard every day and did his job,” he said.

He was also a man of faith.

Pastor Richard Hane married Besser and his wife.

“Whenever he came to church I always remembered his smiling family.  He was a friendly guy and quit in some ways,” said Hane.

But he didn’t shy away from his natural gift of music.

“They all sang together and sounded beautiful.,” said Hane.

Todd’s father, Larry Besser, can attest to all of those great things.

“I didn’t get to see him that much.  But, we had fun when we did that’s for sure,” said Larry.

What he’ll miss most are the road trips to Texas in the winter.

“He used to come down and help drive me back,” he said.

Prosecutors are expected to charge Chris Besser, 21, Tuesday morning.

Funeral Services for Todd and his son are scheduled for Sunday, May 17 at Elk River High School.
