Kyle Smalley of Duluth was a car lover and the brains and muscle behind Duluth’s biggest drag race and car show.

Earlier this week he died expectantly and this weekend his memory was honored.

“Right now I’m feeling overwhelmed,” said Smalley’s older sister Linda Talbot.

Hot rods, motorcycles, friends and family packed Kmart’s marts parking lot in Duluth for a man who played many roles to many people.

“He was a husband, father, uncle and a great uncle,” said Talbot.

The 57-year-old’s passion for cars and mechanics made him a local car racing legend.

“It was a love for him, it’s part of him,” said Talbot.

“A lot of people built cars just so they could try and race him,” Smalley’s friend Chris Pirkola said. “He was a big influence, big influence.”

“Just by looking at how packed the parking lot was you can tell he touched a lot of lives and made many friends.

“He was just a cool cat, always upbeat, fun to talk to,” said Pirkola.”

“You could count on him for anything,” said Talbot.

The large crowd traveled from Kmart to Denfeld high school where his funeral was held.

“It’s tough, you know we’re crying for a few days and they’ll be more today,” said Pirkola.

Although he physically is not still with them Smalley’s legacy and memories of his generosity will live on.

“He’s just a great guy and we’re all gonna miss him and hopefully his son can follow his footsteps,” said Pirkola.

The cause of Smalley’s death is still unknown.

Those close to him tell FOX 21 he had been battling Lyme disease for years.
