Planting Flowers to Help Beautify the City

The rain Wednesday morning held off for just long enough to see some volunteer gardeners use their free time to help out the City of Duluth.
Volunteers donned their gloves and grabbed their tools to dig in the dirt at Bayfront Park Wednesday morning.
They are planting flowers in planters that will be distributed at several locations around Downtown Duluth and Canal Park.
Kristina Bourne, a mother of two, brought her three-year-old daughter out to help with the effort.
She says it was a great way to get their daughter outside for the day.
“She gets to get her hands dirty, which is pretty cool,” Bourne said. “Digging in the dirt is a fabulous thing for children to do, and she gets to do it here. She gets to help and be part of giving back to Duluth.”
Bourne’s outlook makes sense – she writes a blog called Outside in Duluth, where she discusses all sorts of opportunities to get children active and outdoors.
The City Parks Department says around 35 volunteers showed up to help.
They prepared nearly 150 planters for the city.
