An April stabbing at the new Steve O’Neil Apartments has results in tight regulations and a strong community within the people who live there, according to CHUM Executive Director Lee Stuart, who manages the building’s mental health and services.
Stuart said there are new restrictions in place involving guests who enter the building.
But the bigger success, she said, is the launch of community building programs that are helping families who live in the building learn skills they may have lacked while homeless.
“So, you and I would learn to begin to care for one another. What are your kids doing? Who’s here? Is this person up to no good? How can we all make our community a better place,” Stuart said.
Meanwhile, an early head start program will soon start, as more than 80 children live in the Steve O’Neil Apartments.
