City of Duluth Cracks Down on Beach Fires on Park Point

In the summer, a fire on the beach may sound like a great idea.

But that comes with a hefty fine on Park Point beach.

You may have seen a big flashing screen on Park Point saying, “Beach Fires Illegal.”

It’s part of an ordinance that’s been around for years and the Parks and Recreation Department has seen an increasing number of fires.

They are putting the sign up as a warning hoping the number will decrease.

“Most people want to do the right thing and they don’t realize it’s against the law. Once they know, they’ll stop doing it,” said manager of Parks and Rec, Kathy Bergen.

Burning hazardous materials, making big fires and disrupting neighbors are reasons why the ordinance is in place.

“Sensitivity of the area with the beach grasses and you’re not that far from neighbors that live down there.  So, we want to be proactive and we don’t allow beach fires down there,” said Bergen.

Signs are expected to stay up all summer.

A fine can be issued for up to $1,000.
