Authorities are saying two garage fires in Duluth are considered suspicious in nature.

On Monday June 15th at 11:00 p.m. the Duluth Fire Department was dispatched to a report of two garages on fire near the intersection of 11th Ave. E and 4th St.

On arrival firefighters found two garages that were fully involved with fire.

Firefighting efforts were hampered initially by the first fire hydrant being inoperable and were met with multiple energized overhead electrical wires that had burned loose and fell to the ground in the alley.

Firefighters were able to use another hydrant in the area for water supply.

The scene was less than favorable as far as safety but firefighters used their training, awareness and efforts to bring the situation under control in about 20 minutes.

There were no contents in the garages and there were no injuries to fire personnel or bystanders.

There was however damage to adjacent buildings near the garages.

At one time one apartment building at 1113 E. 4th St. did ignite from radiant heat but was extinguished before it entered the structure.

There was another structure that had moderate damage to the siding but did not burn.

Twenty-two firefighters responded to the fire from headquarters, UMD area, Lakeside, and Woodland stations.

If anyone has any information that would assist in the investigation to please call the Duluth Fire Departments fire marshal’s office.

The two garages were a total loss and the power was interrupted to the area for most of the night but was restored by Minnesota Power.
