The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office says surveillance video outside Black Bear Casino shows a K-9 officer from Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office assaulting his dog.

The sheriff’s deputy, Brett Berry, 48, is charged with one count of animal cruelty and one count of assaulting a public safety officer (the dog).

The incident happened June 15.

Authorities say Berry picked his dog up by the collar and then slammed it to the ground.

The dog then ran between the two entrance doors of the casino, which is when authorities say Berry repeatedly struck the dog.

“It’s a serious deal, obviously, so that’s why our officers gathered the information and referred it to the County Attorney to take a look at it for charges. Yeah, it’s significant allegations,” said Chief Deputy Brian Belich, of the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office.

Five minutes before the incident, Black Bear’s security escorted the officer out of the casino’s bar.

They reported him being upset.

Meanwhile, Berry has been placed on administrative leave.

His K-9 was evaluated by a veterinarian, suffered no injuries and is now in the care of people other than the deputy.
