A vegetable that holds a special place in the Northland’s heart was celebrated Saturday.

CHUM kicked off their 11th annual Rhubarb Festival.

More than 1,100 pies, bars, salsas, brats and even rhubarb burritos were sold with the goal of raising $65,000 dollars.

“This is CHUM’s largest fundraiser of the year,” CHUM executive director Lee Stuart said. “This is a benefit to help us run the shelter and food shelf throughout Duluth. To meet our mission of providing basic necessities for fostering stable lives and organizing for a just and compassionate community.”

The fun also included contests and activities for kids.

CHUM along with volunteers spent the last three weeks harvesting, chopping and preparing rhubarb for the festival.
