Tuesday night, a kitchen grease fire displaced eight Duluthians.

The Duluth Fire Department got the call at 6:59 p.m. and responded to a structure fire at 329 N. 4th Ave. W.

Smoke was seen coming from the eaves of a two-story four unit apartment building.

Overhaul continued for three hours due to the amount of hidden spaces within the ceiling framework.

All occupants got out of the apartment safely and none were injured.

One Duluth firefighter received a minor burn, was checked out by one of the local hospitals, and returned to duty shortly thereafter.

The Red Cross assisted with the placement of eight tenants as some of the apartments are uninhabitable.

Now, the Red Cross is helping the victims with shelter.

Volunteers immediately put them up in a hotel and gave them clothing.

Over the next 3 days, they will ensure they get the assistance they need.

“Times are tough, insurance isn’t a top of their priority. So, we help them out with that,” said Disaster Program Manager with the Red Cross, Tony Guerra.

Damage is estimated to be around $65,000.
