Deep Winter Greenhouse to Provide Fresh Produce

The Duluth City Council will vote Monday night on whether to purchase a vacant lot near Denfeld High School.

The city is planning to turn the lot into a greenhouse and community garden.

The greenhouse will be utilized by Community Action Duluth to grow fresh produce during the winter months and extend the Seeds of Success Urban Farming Program’s employment cycle.

The program already operates from April to October and provides job opportunities for Northlanders with employment barriers.

Barriers can range from criminal conviction, to previous lay-offs or bad credit.

Community Action Duluth executive director Angie Miller said Monday that no one with a violent past will be employed at the greenhouse facility.

This has been a point of contention with at least one school board member who objects to the city’s plans for the space.

Miller says she invites anyone who objects to the project on those grounds to call Community Action Duluth, and she would be glad to introduce them to program workers.

The produce grown in the greenhouse will be used to fund future plantings, jobs, and Community Action Duluth.

The produce will be sold for affordable prices at the Lincoln Park Farmer’s Market in the Harrison Community Center.
