“From 5th to 7th avenue east the streets were blocked off to create unity and relationships in the hillside neighborhood.

No cars allowed as Duluth’s Central and East Hillside neighborhoods came together to celebrate.

Two blocks on Fourth Street were closed to traffic, making room for vendors, games, food and entertainment.

“I like to mingle with people and have some fun,” said Hillside resident Kris Janssen. “Listen to the bands, meeting all the people in the neighborhood.”

Blocking off parts off neighborhoods is a fairly new movement across the country.

Hillfest organizers tell FOX 21 they brought the trend to Hillside to promote involvement and build a stronger community.

“Getting to know your neighbors is really important just for our own happiness level,” Hillfest organizer James Gittemeir said. “Just knowing who our neighbors are it does also eliminate the unknown fear. Fear of people who are unknown.”

This is the 6th year of the Hillfest and organizers say they plan on hosting it again next summer.
