Homeless Shelter Looking for Winter Donations

As the weather gets colder, the needs list of homeless shelters and food banks increases.

Temperatures dropping means the emergency shelters, like Loaves and Fishes, fill up faster.

“There are a lot of people who are sleeping outside, and a lot of the partnering organizations that we work with are at capacity, so there’s a lack of beds for people,” said Drew Anderson, a volunteer for Loaves and Fishes.

Shelters are asking for donations of food, clothing, and camping gear.

“If people are not at an emergency shelter they may be doubling up or camping.,” said Anderson.

An event called Community Connect is being held on October 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

It’s a service fair, including things like flu shots, foot care, haircuts, and a clothing exchange.

It’s also a chance for the community to come together to help.

Organizers say that’s why an event like this one is crucial.

“Because we can connect people with resources that they may not know about within town,” said Anderson.

Organizers say they not only need supplies, but volunteers like hair stylists, for the event.

Donations can be delivered to the Dorothy Day House at 712 Jefferson Street between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. daily.
