Special Olympics Bowling Tournament

130 Athletes Take Part in the Fun

More than 130 athletes laced up their bowling shoes to knock down some pins Saturday afternoon.

Those taking part were Special Olympic athletes from northern Wisconsin.

Bowling is just one of the athlete’s seasonal activities and organizers said it’s the most popular.

“Brings them out and gets them active, a health component to possibly just a sedentary life. It’s a really good experience for them to get out of their shells, make friends and be active,” said Melissa Maxwell with Special Olympics Wisconsin.

Once the snow flies athletes will take part in downhill and cross country skiing, as well as snowshoeing.

Anyone over the age of eight with an intellectual disability is able to join in on the fun.

Also fun to note, our own Dan Hanger threw out the first bowling ball at Saturday’s event.
